It's October, and that means it’s Tyre Safety Month! In partnership with the UK-based charity, TyreSafe, Richmond Motor Group are helping to raise awareness of the importance of correct and safe tyre maintenance, with a FREE tyre Safety Check!
As the gloomy nights and stormy weather are drawing closer, correctly maintained tyres are more important than ever!
Illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres are the second most common vehicle defect resulting in crashes. Over 5,300 casualties have been linked to tyre-related incidents over the past five years. The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) estimate that approximately 2.2 million cars fail the MOT Test due to tyre-related defects each year, accounting for 27.8% of all MOT failures.
It is vital that you carry out routine tyre maintenance and checks to ensure the safety of not only yourself and your loved ones, but also the safety of other road users and pedestrians. In support of the UK-based Charity, Tyresafe, Richmond Motor Group are asking: Are YOUR tyres ready for ACTion? Please follow these handy reminders:
Take ACTion with These Quick Tyre Checks:
Air pressure: Use a reliable and accurate tyre pressure gauge to check that the tyre air pressure is at the recommended settings. Check the vehicle handbook for more information.
Condition: Check for any physical lumps or bulges on the tyre, they could indicate any internal damage and increase the risk of tyre failure, leading to a potential incident. Should any lumps, bulges or physical damage be found, then this is a sign that your tyres need legally checking by a certified dealer. Our FREE tyre check is perfect in this situation, as we can ensure your tyres are safe and fix any issues, getting you back on the road as quickly as possible.
Tread depth: Tread depth should be routinely checked using an accurate gauge to ensure that the tyre tread depth is above the legal minimum of 1.6mm. If you do not have access to an accurate tread depth gauge, a 20p coin can be used instead as a rough guide. Place the coin into your tyre grooves, and if the outer band of the 20p coin is still visible, then your tyre tread depth is below the legal limit and should be changed immediately. At Richmond Motor Group, we recommend replacing your tyres when the tyre tread depth is below 3mm for safer road driving.
Millimetres Make Metres of Difference
With the wetter weather setting in and as roads become wet with rain, driving conditions will become more challenging. The legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, however, vehicle braking distances in wet driving conditions increase significantly when tyre tread is below 3mm.
