What are the different vehicle types and how do they work?

Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, which uses energy stored in batteries. A hybrid electric vehicle cannot be plugged in to charge the battery. Instead, the battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal combustion engine, allowing very small distances to be driven on battery power

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) works in a similar way to a self-charging hybrid– there is a combustion engine that works with an electric motor and a battery. A plug-in hybrid has a larger battery than a self-charging hybrid car. This allows the car to be powered just by it’s battery for limited distances, but you also have the combustion engine should you be travelling on a longer journey. Typically, a PHEV can travel between 30 & 40 miles on its battery power.
In the same was as a Hybrid vehicle, a PHEV can be charged a little while driving, but for the full benefit, you should plug in to charge the battery. Typically, a PHEV can have the battery fully charged in around 3 hours.

The most eco-friendly of the range, a full electric vehicle runs on its battery power alone. The battery can be charged by simply plugging into a dedicated chargepoint which can either be installed at your home, or there are thousands around the country and this is only set to increase. The battery also benefits from gaining charge through regenerative braking. As there are zero emissions, there are also many financial benefits to driving a full electric vehicle, as well as the environmental ones.
